The conference will take place on the campus of the Ruhr-University Bochum . We will meet at the so-called “Veranstaltungszentrum” (VZ), located directly underneath the dining hall of the university (MENSA). It is a 10-minute walk from the subway station (U35 “Ruhr-Universität”) to the Veranstaltungszentrum across campus. For your orientation on campus, we recommend the campus map
With more than 40,000 students, the Ruhr-University is one of the largest campus universities in Germany. In the 1950s, Helmut Hinrich conceptualized it as a “harbor of knowledge“ open to everyone: Four building complexes, each hosting different academic disciplines, dock like ships at the central building, at the top of which the Audimax (auditorium maximum, largest lecture hall) is located like a crown in the shape of a mussel.
Keeping the picture of the university as a harbor at the back of your mind, you will be surprised how naturally green and concrete-grey the surrounding ocean is. The stunning sight of the lush green Ruhr valley stands in sharp contrast to the dominance of concrete in the buildings (an architectural style dominant in post-war times). We highly recommend walks through the Botanic and Chinese Garden (Botantischer / Chinesischer Garten) located towards the southern end of campus or even further through the Lottental to Lake Kemnade.
